Recent Projects

I made a goal at the end of 2019 to create pieces centered around profound moments. I begin here with the most recent, “the Biggie” as I call it.

I was asked to create a stage-size nativity scene for the 2021 multi-faith, Creche Festival in Huntington, UT.

Canvas Painting: 9′ X 20′ acrylic on canvas; Silhouettes: Cardboard & wood

There is a lot to say about this project that I’ll have to blog about. For this space though, I’ll just give a summary and a brief slideshow. The canvas is made from two, 9′ x 12′ painter’s drop cloths that I ironed and then sewed together to make 24′ wide. The finished painting is 20′ wide, leaving enough salvage on the sides to wrap around the frame. It took 60 hours to create + 3 hours and a team to install.

“She believes in you.” 2021, 8″ x 10″, oil on canvas board

In memory of my dearest friend, MarLayne. She loved deeply and championed those she loved.

“Flat Top Mountain” 2021, Ink on Linen, 10″ x 24″

Commission: Sacred emblem for a special memorial.

“Learning to Trust” 2020, oil+gesso on wood panel, 6” x 8”

Watching my daughter and her goat reminded me that trust is a lifelong pursuit. The sweetness of the interaction of a child and her goat can remind us all that bravery is worth a try.

“Grandpa’s House” 2020, Oil & Gesso on Canvas board, 12″ x 24″

Commission goal: Bring an old, faded black and white photo to life.

“This is Anne Frank” 2019, Digital Painting

This is a concept page for a possible children’s picture book where the character is telling her cat Anne Frank’s story. (Anne had a cat she loved.) I was inspired by my own visit to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and this statue in the university city of Utrecht, Netherlands. I learned about the tradition for girls to leave a flower at this statue once they graduate from college. They do it in honor of Anne and her unfulfilled dreams of attending college. Learning this lit a fire in me that resulted in this illustration–13 years after visiting the statue and after I received my BFA.

Study of the 2015 adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice,” 2019, Digital Painting

This movie profoundly moved me because of the cinematography. I have watched it many times with the sole purpose of studying the artistry of the camera angles, timing of scene shots, the lighting, and many other subtleties. Aside from that (or maybe because of that), the moment depicted in this scene is often where I go in my mind when I need internal solace.
