Sacred Moments Project

I made a goal at the end of 2019 to create pieces centered around sacred moments. Here is that collection beginning with the most recent, “the Biggie” as I call it.

I was asked to create a stage-size nativity scene for the 2021 multi-faith, Creche Festival in Huntington, UT. The commissioned objective: “To set the stage.”

Canvas Painting: 9′ X 20′ acrylic on canvas; Silhouettes: Cardboard & wood

There is a lot to say about this project that I’ll have to blog about. For this space, I’ll just give a summary and a brief slideshow. The canvas is made from two, 9′ x 12′ painter’s drop cloths that I ironed and then sewed together to make 24′ wide. The finished painting is 20′ wide, leaving enough salvage on the sides to wrap around the frame. It took 60 hours to create + 3 hours and a team to install.

“She believes in you.” 2021, 8″ x 10″, oil on canvas board

In memory of my dearest friend, MarLayne. She loved deeply and championed those she loved.

“Flat Top Mountain” 2021, Ink on Linen, 10″ x 24″

Commission: Sacred emblem for a special memorial.

“Learning to Trust” 2020, oil+gesso on wood panel, 6” x 8”

Watching my daughter and her goat reminded me that trust is a lifelong pursuit. The sweetness of the interaction of a child and her goat can remind us all that bravery is worth a try.

“Grandpa’s House” 2020, Oil & Gesso on Canvas board, 12″ x 24″

Commission goal: Bring an old, faded black and white photo to life.

“This is Anne Frank” 2019, Digital Painting

My time at the Anne Frank House and visiting her statue in Amsterdam left me with a deep reverence and connection to Anne. This is a concept page for a possible children’s picture book where the character is telling her cat the story of Anne.

Study of the 2015 adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice,” 2019, Digital Painting

This movie profoundly moved me just through the cinematography. I have watched it many times to study the angles, timing, lighting and many of its other subtleties. The moment depicted in this scene is often where I go in my mind when I need solace.
